Observation details
Adult or possibly transitioning from third cycle. Very dark mantle. Yellow legs, feet, and eyes. Yellow bill with red spot, and some smudgy black - the feature that makes age determination trickier. Presumably, a full adult would have no black remaining on the bill. Slightly smaller than Herring Gulls present, but larger and considerably darker on the mantle than California Gulls available for comparison. Bill quite straight, without significant gonydial angle, which along with size and bill coloration features, rules out Yellow-footed Gull. This bird showed very heavy streaking on the crown, nape and neck. Very striking feature which is also more consistent with Lesser Black-backed Gull than Yellow-footed Gull.
