Observation details
Captured at 11:50 and banded as standard. Measurements were as follows: Wing length = 80mm, Tarsus length = 13 mm, Tail length = 65 mm. Aged as a hatch year bird by skull. Due to the extensive dark coloration on the lower mandible (7.9 mm), and overall grayer rather than olive plumage, the formula presented in the Pyle Guide (1997) to separate Eastern from Western Wood-Pewee was performed as follows; a) longest primary - longest secondary was 20.7 mm, and b) tail tip to longest undertail covert was 26.5 mm. Finally, a - b was 5.8 mm, under the 6.5 mm limit for Eastern Wood-Pewee according tp Pyle. All measurements were taken by both EJ and KR to reduce any measurement bias. When released the bird sang once, giving the buzzy descending version, very different from the upslurred song of the Eastern Wood-Pewee. Released at the red barn just across the bridge from the Hannaford parking lot at 12:30.
