Observation details
adult in worn alternate; in the field, took it to be a hendersoni Short-billed (buffy-rufous breast and belly; white lower belly and vent; fairly sparse dark markings on the breast; seemingly evenly spaced barring along sides of breast and flanks); but my far from great photos seemed a much better fit for Long-billed: dark bars (not round spots) on the sides of the upper breast; relatively dark upperparts with white rather than buff edgings; bill appeared rather long for any Short-billed; My photos are consistent with those of the bird present since 19 Aug that had been considered a Long-billed by a few people but entered on most eBird lists as Short-billed (usually without comments). So I sent my photos and a selection of much better ones to Jonathan Alderfer and Jon Dunn for their opinions. Both find the bird to be a LBDo in worn alternate plumage. Jon mentioned additional aspects supporting that ID: worn alternate SBDo is not likely to be as deeply colored in the vent/undertail region or breast; from what can be seen of the tail, it appears very dark with thin white bars whereas hendersoni SBDo have the palest tail of any Limnodromus taxon.
