Observation details
Amazingly tame. First seen with three Dunlin. Grayish upperparts with a mixture of dark centered and all gray feathers scapulars suggesting it was in moult. Finely marked crown, nape and mantle. Bold supercilium. White upper tail coverts visible at rest (never flew while I was there) with dark central tail feathers. Primaries black & only just extending over the tip of the tail. Underparts white except for finely streaked breast extending onto flanks. Bill dark except for reddish color to base of lower mandible. Bill strongly tapered giving it a slightly downcurved appearance, shorter than Dunlin. Legs black. Silent. Able to get within 8 feet (minimum focus) and it did not move! Probably the most photographed American vagrant that year in the UK. Will add my own photos. First reported on the 16th September through to the 3rd October 1982.
