Observation details
Behavior: Hunting/Killing - trying to kill a rodent by pulling it under a running vehicle Prey: Rodent (Matured rat - Mouse) Waiting in my car when I heard some scuffle and screeching noise and saw two crows from behind a vehicle that is parked ahead of me. After a few minutes slowly a rodent is observed limping and dragging itself crossing the road. The crows then followed chasing it. One of the crows disappeared but the other attacked the already injured and weak rodent. Behavioral observations: 1) When the rodent has some energy left and limping away, the crow is always cautiously approaching the rodent, dragging it by the tail and immediately stabbing the rodent in the head and back (spine) with its sharp bill. Probably it is trying to break it's back and stabbing in head to kill it quickly 2) Most of the time, the crow was trying to pull the rodent to the side of the road. But, at one point , when the rodent was defending and challenging, the crow tried to pull it back into the middle of the road under an oncoming car (brown Honda city). It very precisely aligned the rodent with the car tyre. The crow smartly tried to kill the rodent???? When it didn't work, it went on stabbing the rodent more aggressively in the head. Looks like the SOP(standard operating procedure) of the crow in killing/hunting small rodents is, - confuse the prey by aiming tail and head - pursue it continuously till it turns weak - poke/stab repeatedly - break the back - stab in the head - use resources (like vehicular traffic if required) - more jabs and stabs to the head to finish Note: At one point the crow tried to fly away with the rodent but when the rodent tried to bite the crow, it immediately dropped it down and attacked it with more aggression. Also, the crow didn't see the first car coming otherwise it would have pulled the rodent under the first car (may be??)
