Observation details
1 CY male. 41.050003, -70.937381, 19.5 miles SW of Martha’s Vineyard and 32 miles south of mainland coast. The bird was found offshore in water alive. We were fishing for mahi-mahi and I heard it splashing and turned behind me and saw it was a bird in the water. We did not see it come in and unsure if it was trying to land and ran out of energy. We maneuvered over to the bird and it tried to swim to the boat. I picked it up it was very weak. Rinsed it off with fresh water and patted it dry. I placed it in a large cooler on a towel and it spent the rest of the time in there until we made it back to Dartmouth. I checked on it periodically and it kept getting stronger and when we released it back on the mainland it was very strong, biting fingers, and flew very quickly into the trees. It was nice to save this beautiful bird.
