Observation details
Very rough estimate of an absolutely enormous flock. Photos and video don’t really do it justice. Flocks of thousands were perched in hedgerow bordering a large dirt holding area where grain or rice must have been stored recently. Large flocks of thousands were constantly overhead. As we flushed them from the hedgerow they amassed on the bare ground and began feeding forming a quivering carpet of birds. Portions of the flock would rise up en mass then alight and continue foraging. Our estimate of one million is not based on much more than this was one of the densest and largest congregation of small birds we’ve ever seen. See videos and photos if you’d like to try to arrive at a more precise estimate.
