Observation details
Unusual was a 1-yr-old (SY) hanging around off the boat launch. This immature had worn primaries and many worn and old juvenile feathers but appeared to have first alternate (= first winter) face and some body feathers. The nape, hindneck, and most scapulars were worn. This bird is not as worn as many first-summer birds can be. It is unusual to see this age on inland ponds in summer. Adult seen nw. of launch going out and on return. Pair (banded) with chick nw. of Ram Is. at mouth of Trout Brook. The female fed the chick a small crayfish. Four adults together east of Blueberry Island, two of which were banded. One adult near Rome town beach (unbanded). Two (unbanded pair, male and female by structure) east of Crooked Island (44°33′45″ N 69°51′17″ W). One adult 200 m south of previous. Four together (ultimately six) at 44°33′51″ N 69°49′39″ W (included "double blue" Blue/Blue male banded in 2008). Then five east toward Snake Point: R/Gr, Y/s; Rstripe/Y,?. A pair in this group was far from their chick, which was on the east side of Snake Point. Gravely injured bird seen 300 meters se. of Otter Island at 44°32′48″ N 69°49′56″ W. Damage to this bird's left wing was severe and could have been from a high speed boat hitting it. Another adult was seen near it. Adult in flight landed south of last birds. Two adults and chick at Oak Island (banded male Ydot/silver; Ystripe/Gr; female Y/Y, Y/?). Two adults, one in Pinkhams Cove and another toward Austin Bog. Adult with chick near Austin Bog (44°29′34″ N 69°50′14″ W). Three east of Long Point, one banded (male from Oak Island was here; so a long way from where first seen. We observed still dependent chicks, one being fed a small crayfish. I will add breeding codes to separate list in atlas blocks where those were seen (but with generic locations)
