Observation details
"Was returning from a short walk from the estate when I noticed some activity on the pathway. Camera settings were not set for this kind of light. So I decided to watch with binocs. Late evening activity on the ground, fairly larger than anything I have seen in the area. That’s when I realised that they were Slaty-legged Crakes. First the male crossed, then the female stood on the trail as two chicks crossed. There was one more chick which was refusing to come outside. Something spooked them and they all went back. Sensing an opportunity, I got my camera ready. We had all crouched low by then. Also slope & bend in the path allowed us to stay out of sight. The second time the adults were better planned. The male came first, inspected the area and stood on the path as the female got the chicks to cross. The 3rd chick stayed back again. The male went back and got him across finally." - Rajiv Kalmadi.
