Media notes
Taken on Kodak Ektachrome (and were also taken on an overcast day) so the colour balance is rather 'cold', though the software that comes with my slide copier has compensated for that a bit. I've cropped the original slides to give you a bigger image of the bird and sharpened them up a bit (but there's a limit to how much sharpening these pictures will take without the film's graininess becoming really obvious). I've readjusted the automatic contrast re-setting that the software applied because that made the images too contrasty (gave the bird what looked like a dark mask in one photo). Charles Williams, 14 August 2022 These pics show the main field marks reasonably well but they're not great. But that's not surprising given they were taken with an old manual Canon FTB and a 300mm Tamron lens (only equivalent to x6 magnification). My current cheap-and-cheerful Nikon bridge camera has a x60 lens, plus image-stabilisation and autofocus, which were either very expensive or unheard of in 1977!
Observation details
A very confiding bird was watched and photographed (by Charles Williams). The second bird replying to its calls was not seen. Osmaston said it was common near Sankoo between 6 and 9 July 1925 finding more nests of this species than of Hume's Whitethroat - we were surprised that we dint see more. It seems very likely that this species has become rarer in Ladakh over the last fifty years.
