Observation details
Different Ficus sp. tree, heavily fruiting found at 08:57 - group of pigeons already present. Most likely same birds since other tree was not far away. One pair and tree lone birds foraging, bachelor males chasing each other - vocalizing/tailwagging often triggered by other’s males song. One bird in particular with quite a lot of soil/clay on its beak, probably from collection of minerals/gizzard-stones. Pigeons seen testing the figs for ripeness, the sheer abundance in this tree probably allowing some pickiness. Not all figs were plucked from the tree, some larger one were eaten by tearing of smaller pieces at a time. One individual was observed eating the fresh sprouts from the tree, despite the presence of fruit, showing that leaves is an important supplement to the birds diet, and not just an alternative in case of food shortage.
