Observation details
Continuing bird. We spotted it perched on a telephone pole eating a bat on the way in and drive up to tell the 20 or so people waiting at the entrance that they were looking the wrong way. The bird ate the entire bat wings and all. Incredible looks all morning. The Merlin chased it off its pole at one point and the BAFA moved a little into the woods and perched fairly visibly for a long time. Sat here calmly despite all the paparazzi. Black helmet, white throat and breast with a little orange on the bottom, black and white barred below with a rich orange rufous vent, black above with thin white barring in the tail. Blueish edging to mantle and rump feathers, browner to more worn wing feathers. Very bright gold-yellow legs with contrasting black talons. Primaries are almost as long as tail. Glad to see this long staying overdue 1st for the ABA and Texas.
