Observation details
2 birds playing hide-and-seek around several tree trunks. Occasionally one would thrust its bill at the other. Some body-swaying. The calls were the seldom heard 'chewerk-chewerk-chewerk' (Winkler, Christie and Nurney - Woodpeckers of the World) interspersed with the more commonly heard single-note 'kwee'. They are probably both males but the bird on the left has a browner face and may be a female. I have seen one other reference to this behaviour which described it as a territorial dispute which makes sense if they are both males. If it is a male and female it could be courtship behaviour.
