Observation details
Continuing bird found by Rosie Howard on July 20. After several attempts to see this bird, we finally saw it cross a small gap and dive into one of the thick willows where it has been seen several times. We could see bits of it at a time but never the whole bird. We knew it was a Vireo by the way it was moving through the foliage; slowly and methodically and not in constant movement like a Warbler. I walked to the far side of the same Willow while Ron remained in place. I saw what I thought was the bird so I motioned for Ron to come over and began to pish softly. The Vireo hopped out onto a bare stick where we were we got a beautiful view and could see all of the field marks. It was in heavy molt and the feathers on the head and throat were very sparse and we could see the bird’s skin. It then hopped back up into the dense leaves where we could see it moving but I could not get a photo. Then it began to singing from deep in the tree. Ron was able to get an audio recording which will be added. The bird was small and very ragged and it was hard to see the color especially since it was backlit. It was dark gray green above with wing bars, yellow flanks and the diagnostic white eye was clearly seen. The bill was large and hooked at the tip.
