Observation details
Observed from a distance two birds closely associating on the grass and one making noisy begging calls. One was an adult chipping sparrow. The other was obviously a recently fledged bird that appeared as large as the chipping sparrow and maybe larger so I thought maybe it was a cowbird. However, as I got nearer the chipping sparrow flew off and then I saw the bright yellow tail tip and faint mask of a waxwing. I also heard at least one other waxwing calling from the tree above so it is possible that they were the attending parents, but it sure looked like the chipping sparrow was attending to the juvenile waxwing before I got there. I was not able to find evidence of brood parasitism in cedar waxwings on Birds of the World so maybe the sparrow was just curious. Photos of waxwing on ebird checklist.
