Observation details
Observed what looks like a pair of American Bitterns from the Observation Platform. We have had other summer occurrences of single birds at Leopold's, and one year at least three were present in early spring. The Virginia Breeding Bird Atlas lists American Bittern as a Coastal Breeder from the last week in May until the second week of August. There are no listed dates for the Piedmont. The Gold Book says no summer breeding records in the Piedmont in the last century.
