Observation details
Visually saw a pair of young juveniles in one location — the first one flew out of the reeds for a short distance (probably about 30-40 yards) and was a bit of a labored flight (like that of a young bird). I also detected some fuzz on its outer body as it flew off. I was not able to get a picture of that one. The other one I just happened to see it about 6 feet deeper into the reeds and midway up some stalks. It didn't fly off and eventually climbed back down the reeds and disappearing from sight. It has a lot of immature fuzz on its outer feathering and a softly colored pinkish bill (seems like a "fledgling"). This is as young a LEBI as I have seen back in Hog Island Gut (south of Haul Road back in marsh across the water way). The audios are from the area of the second LEBI and I attributed it to that young bird but I didn't visually see it vocalizing. The calls were faint (but close to where the LEBI disappeared) and sound like a bit of clacking. The third LEBI was a fly out from where Hog Island Gut almost meets the Mt. Vernon bike trail wooden bridge. It flew out about 50 yards from that end and flew past me for probably about 75-100 yards before landing down back in the marsh reeds. This was the furthest up the Hog Island Gut I had ever seen an LEBI emerge from.
