220713_033. Western Crowned Warbler. BirdA. Bg. Indian Pitta
Observation details
Photo. SR calls!! First heard the bird's song at 08h32 (full breeding song phrase, but only one strophe), and immediately recognised it but dismissed it absent-mindedly thinking that Purple Sunbird must be doing something unusual with its trilling song; in the next second all doubts were dismissed when I heard the bird calling, the repetitive two-noted "Titch-weee" call and watched two birds high in the canopy of broad-leaved trees at the dam spot depression! (Song was only given that one time). Two birds were vocalising very aggressively, giving calls repeatedly and relentlessly in a series, in some sort of a vocal altercation between the two (see SR pretty cool rec, with Pitta singing in the bg & peafowls howling). Also, about the same time a pair of unhappy-looking Purple Sunbirds were vocalising alarm calls around one least-bothered Spotted Owlet. Indian Pitta calling at the same time and I didn't even pay attention to it!! (Sorry Pitta, but I like warblers more...). Pitta was prob shouting "I pity the fool...'. Then started to drizzle and raining steady (had to get my umbrella out/but still birdable rain). Only leaf-warbler at this time of year, and likely the first one of its species to arrive this early/in migration from breeding grounds in western Himalaya. Wonder if some of these early birds are failed breeders or just finished their business early?! Gosh, we know so little about this amazing warbler!
