Observation details
Playing hide and seek with the Least Bitterns for at least an hour. At least three Least Bittern were heard calling from the cattails near the beginning of the boardwalk. One flew by as we first arrived, and then multiple flights were observed as the bitterns flew short distances from one side of the marsh to the other disappearing in to the cattails just south of the boardwalk. I had one quick view of a LEBI perched in the cattails and another good look as one flew south through the narrow channel between the reeds. It's back appeared to be a dark midnight blue contrasting with it's pale yellow body. Chuck chuk chuk calls heard repeatedly from multiple locations. Also other vocalizations were heard from just after the beginning of the boardwalk which may be a nest site? After a valiant effort Bob D was able to get one photo of these elusive birds. Target bird for the trip these little guys were a real treat. US Lifer for me!
