Observation details
Unseen bird giving a wrentit-like bouncing ball vocalization. It gave this phrase three times in succession. Bird was near the entrance where the path emerges into the open prairie. **Edit** Adding additional details to this observation: At about 9:10pm as I was leaving the prairie and approaching the bend where the trail goes through the trees back out to the gate, I heard a clear "bouncing ball" type vocalization that sounded like a wrentit. The bird gave the phrase two additional times, and I was able to just catch the third phrase in a recording. Upon reviewing the audio, I thought the vocalization was wrentit-like, but sounded slightly off. I thought it was perhaps somewhat reminiscent of SOSP in pitch. Enough was "off" about the single recorded phrase that I felt it could likely be something other than the very unexpected wrentit. It turns out that others had heard the same bird vocalizing in the same area over the past couple days. Dave Irons heard it sing once, earlier on 7/6, and at the time he felt it was a wrentit. I am updating this record from passerine sp. to wrentit at Dave's request, with the idea being to add visibility and awareness to this record. Hopefully others will refind the bird in the coming days. **Edit - New recordings of the bird have been obtained and they seem to confirm it as a SOSP, as originally suspected.
