Observation details
I visited the location of the last report of the Summer Tanager that was made June 4 by Nick Hill and Calley Issacson. The site was along 32nd St NE which is the west boundary of Turtle River State Park. It is near the area within the park where numerous birders have reported Summer Tanager, not only last spring, but the previous two springs as well. After listening along the fence line for about a minute and not hearing a tanager, I broadcast one cycle of the summer tanager song and the ki-tu-tuck call notes , then used Merlin to listen for and record responses, As soon as I heard the ki-tu-tuck I glanced down at phone and saw that Merlin has recorded Summer Tanager. My hearing the call and Merlin identifying the calls as Summer Tanager occurred several more times. At one point I noticed what appeared to be a female summer tanager sitting in the open across the road where there are trees along a ravine. The accompanying photos were one-stop over-exposed with the result that some areas of the bird are blown out (particularly the rump). The photos as shown have been cropped and adjusted for exposure. The photos shows tinges of red, especially on the head, but this is not inconsistent with a female Summer Tanager. I never got a look at the tanager making the call notes and so I don't know if they were made by the male or female. I was unable to verify that the male was present. The first tanager call on the Merlin recording is at 8 seconds and there are several more calls thereafter. Although I can hear about 7 calls when the recording is replayed on my phone held next to my ear, I can't hear the calls when the audio is played on my computer. Hopefully those with better hearing or computer audio can. Overall today's sighting of a female provides evidence that there has been a pair of Summer Tanagers at Turtle River State Park this summer.
