Observation details
EVENTS: This bird was first spotted (at about 9:15) by 4-yr old Wyatt Smith (grandson) calling it a duck. My son, Austin, who was fishing with Wyatt near the base of the 2nd bridge, south side of the causeway, was able to obtain very close up (10 yards) cell phone pix and sent them to me. The first birders arrived about an hour later, but the bird had drifted under the bridge and off to the north by then. Typical Sunday traffic getting into Honeymoon Island SP made it tough for anyone wanting to come after 11. DESCRIPTION: A large shearwater/pelagic species. The very dark cap extends just below the eyes and is set off by the white collar. The rear edge of that black cap and the brownish half-collar near the wings frame a neat white triangular shape along the head. It had a vey dark tail and a black, long bill. PHOTOS: The first photo was taken by Austin Smith from approx. 10 yards with his cell phone. The other three are all mine, from afar and cropped closer.
