Observation details
(39.6246672, -76.7329057). While I was following the KEWA, I heard a faint nuthatch song that seemed lower toned and slower than WBNU. Sam Tillman recently thought he heard a RBNU so after stalking the KEWA for a bit I decided to chase the nuthatch song. By the second time I heard it calling I was convinced it was a RBNU and took a series of recordings as I got closer. Initially I saw brief glances high in pines around gps coordinates—bad midday lighting but I caught glimpses of red underbelly and potential striping of head. Complicating matters were other passerines working the high pines—PIWA, TUTI, and CACH. Most notably, as I was watching suspected RBNU work horizontal branch, I heard a separate RBNU song coming from a few hundred feet away! At first I thought I lost track of the original RBNU, but I relocated that one and it dropped down closer to me. Pretty confident that means there are at least two in the area. Have pics and recordings.
