Observation details
Male and female pair. Both showed short gray bill with downturned upper mandible. Not long and straight like a summer. Top of bill appeared black. Both birds exhibited extensively dingy gray auriculars, flanks, and back. On the male, which I observed for a longer period, I noticed the gray extended into the wings, particularly the greater coverts. Both birds showed gray legs. The male was otherwise bright red, particularly bright on the throat and crown. The undertail appeared a little lighter, almost pinkish. In certain lights, the male seemed an orangish-red. Female dingy greenish yellow overall, aside from previously noted gray areas. First heard a single chup while listening to a singing Gray Vireo. Played some chup calls on a whim and both birds flew directly at me. The male first landed on a rock just over 10 meters away from me. Watched them off an on for the next 2+ hours. Occasional chups, male sang for about a half hour around 1715. Photos and recordings to be uploaded tomorrow.
