Observation details
Shocker! Heard a strange song while exiting the day-use parking lot. Stopped the car and recorded 2 separate songs 2 minutes apart. Merlin could not ID the song at this point. Bird was quite close to the car - about 10-15 feet from the pavement in a Shore Pine scrubby forest area and close to the ground or eye-level. While the bird was singing prominently right in front of me, I could not find it visually. So frustrating. My husband was overheated and I had to leave to bring him home. When I got home (5 minutes away), Merlin had now id'd the song as White-Eyed Vireo! I then shared the bird on the What'sApp group for the county and got confirmation back that it was indeed a White-Eyed Vireo. I returned to the location as did several other birders, but the bird was now silent or gone. We will try this evening after the weather cools down. It is unseasonably hot today in Manzanita exceeding 80 degrees in the parking lot.
