Observation details
Quick estimate supported by hurried cellphone photos of this shockingly large flock as it rocketed over the Mansfield parking lot, turning to loop around the crowd gathered at the VCE banding station twice. Large, sturdy finches giving constant 'jip-jip' flight calls. KTol got a photo of 56 individuals that appeared to take up about 3/4 of the flock. Largest RECR flock any of us have ever seen and an apparent new VT high count, though frustrating that the exact number wasn't successfully documented. Brief recording made and I will try to figure out which Type these were later. After not hearing a single RECR the first few weeks of the banding season on Mansfield, this huge flock of loud, low-flying birds was a surprise to all!
