Observation details
Very good looks at area where they’ve been reported. Stopped and listened and heard some quiet tapping so I walked over and saw the male quietly tapping on a pine and sipping sap from the tap holes. The head and back feathers were wet and/or pretty worn maybe from going in and out of nest, so they appeared weirdly whitish. However clearly just black feathering above with white lines on face and white wing patch. Heavy black barring and smudging on flanks, scratched its neck at one point exposing the yellow belly. Little red chin. I watched it while it was on the main pine for about 5-10 minutes then it flew to a dead snag right above me and drummed and then flew way off to the southwest. Bold white rump in flight.
