Individual #2. Note the pale brown carpal bars.
Observation details
Observed two separate birds. The first came by with some Wedge-tailed Shearwaters, sticking out immediately for its smaller size and completely brown coloration; a noddy in most respects. However, this bird was arcing like crazy between the waves--even more so than the nearby Wedgies--with a flight style that did not match the direct flight of a noddy. The pale brown carpal bars are barely visible in my photos. The second bird came by later. Nothing was around for a size comparison, but it still struck me as being a smaller bird. Photos of this individual came out much better (I think my camera was better adjusted to the lighting), showing the pale carpal bars and small bill very well.
