Observation details
Distant rapid tooting song heard at dusk and initially mistaken for a pygmy-owl. As the bird approached it began to give more widely-spaced single notes that perfectly matched the first song listed for Short-tailed Nighthawk in the Merlin app. Eventually spotted the bird and watched it hunt for insects overhead just above the canopy. Extremely short tail (equal in length to head protrusion) and lack of white wing patches noted. iPhone video obtained showing vocalizations, flight pattern, and silhouette. About 0.85 miles NW of Sylvester Village on the road towards the escarpment. Possibly two individuals.
