Falcated Duck, Padilla Bay Trail, 16 January 2017
Observation details
N end of trail; Falcated Duck found yesterday, /p white culmen spot noted /m This bird had been found by Rick Klawitter yesterday. He had been camping with Eric Noah at Bay View State Park, and they had taken photos after finding the bird there. I believe they also saw it at Padilla Bay Trail later on. This Falcated Duck male was roughly wigeon-sized. Green and chestnut head. Dark bill. White dot at point where culmen reaches feathers. Grey vermiculation on breast. Sides grey. Long, sickle-shaped tertials. Steep forehead. Slightly crested or maned. White chin with white horizontal bar visible as bird swims, showing up like a white collar between head and lower neck. Black bar, perhaps a bit of the speculum, is visible as bird swims, on lower edge of forward wing. I took a few bad photos with my new Canon camera.
