Observation details
Pair feeding on the mud with Killdeer. Moderately small sandpipers (but larger than expected for, say, Least or Semipalmated Sandpiper) with long wings clearly extending past tail, crisp dark streaking across breast and flanks, a bit of a pale supercilium showing, moderately long bill with slight droop, and dark legs (portions not covered in dry mud, which actually made them appear lighter). One of the birds happened to be holding its wings in such a position that a hint of the white rump was visible most of the time. A Cooper's Hawk shot in and flushed both of these birds along with all the Killdeer; only a few Killdeer returned while I watched.
