Observation details
Headed north via boat on the east side of Honeymoon (intercoastal), following a line of crab trap buoys. Depth about 6-8 feet. Bird was sitting on the water as we passed it at about 30 feet off our port. Bird flushed from the water and realizing it was not a Gull, immediately stopped the boat and turned back to where the bird had taken flight. Through binoculars, bird had gray head and neck contrasting to a dark mantle and white belly, bill was light colored, yellowish. Bird was short tailed with long stiff wings. The bird banked and was able to see the underside of the bird, under wing was bright white with a dark border to the entire wing, most dark edging towards tip. Flight pattern as the bird started to move away from us was low to the water (just a few feet above). Bird took several wing beats on stiff wings and then glided for several seconds, repeating this pattern. Never saw any "banking" flight, but wind was minimal. It was at this time that I went digging for the small digital camera we had on the boat for monitoring my project site. Bird, at this time had begun flapping more and was quickly headed NW towards the pass between Honeymoon and Three Rooker. Took several quick, photos in the birds general direction hoping to get something in frame. Pictures were distant and pixellated when zoomed in, "best" picture attached. Attempted to chase after the bird, but lost visual sight. Drove around Three Rooker and then back down past Honeymoon hoping the bird had sat back down on the water, to no avail.
