Media notes
This photo shows the bird picking up a granola bar crumb from the ground just a few feet away from me.
Observation details
Along the trail, just below the summit of Mount Tom. Two hikers were feeding them bits of a granola bar, and they gave some to us so that we could feed the birds. I dislike how the feeding of Gray Jays makes them tamer and more likely to approach people, because for me, that cheapens the experience of seeing these wild birds. On the other hand, feeding these birds allows for the opportunity to interact closely with them, and I'm sure that for many people, having this experience helps them appreciate nature and care more about protecting it. Anyway, it was neat to have the birds come in so close to us, and they're definitely cool birds regardless of how tame they are. Unfortunately I didn't manage to get any satisfactory photos of them today.
