Observation details
Saw a single bird, pecking on the trunk of a leafless tree. Flew away on closer approach. We entered a relatively clear patch of mixed deciduous forests, and as we walked along the forest trail, we heard the loud drumming sound along with whinnying calls, typical of this species. On further approach, the Slaty coloured, huge bird, about the size of a black kite flew away from the leafless tree (Albizia lebbeck) in front of us. It was unmistakable, the sheer size of this bird makes it the largest of the woodpeckers. Today, its call was heard for a long time even after it went away from our sight. Its far penetrating call seems to resound throughout the forest land.
