Observation details
Found earlier today by Cole Bauer. Obvious phalarope, swimming and picking at the surface. Occasionally turned in circles but did not really spin. Appeared to follow a line of scum in the water that presumably had attracted some insects, as the bird was picking at the surface frequently. Seen once during a brief flight when its white wing stripe was clearly evident. On the water through a spotting scope its all dark, relatively long and slender bill was seen. Unable to clearly detect eye color and legs were never seen. Plumage-wise, it showed a dark crown, reddish brown nape and neck-sides, grayish breast, and whitish throat and chin. Flanks were pale. Upper wing coverts and/or scapulars showed paler stripes, but due to distance it was difficult to clearly describe the back pattern. It was possible to say that its back was definitely not solid gray, since the ground colors were dark brown and buff. No vocalizations could be heard due to the distance. Estimated to be 150 to 250 m offshore. We were looking northeast initially so the lighting was very good in the afternoon.
