Observation details
Regionally rare, but probably extending range eastward from western New York and the Great Lakes. Small, attenuated 𝘚𝘱𝘪𝘻𝘦𝘭𝘭𝘢 in breeding plumage, ochreous overall with strongly contrasting facial pattern comprising pale lores, buffy supercilium, dark "mustache", and gray nape. Easily distinguished from 𝘚. 𝘱𝘢𝘴𝘴𝘦𝘳𝘪𝘯𝘢 in spring by these plumage cues. Singing nearly continuously during observation period, giving a series of two monotonous, insect-like buzzes. Found on 2022 Century Run with Tom Williams. Heard almost immediately after a short walk in from the parking area, then spotted in low vegetation by Tom, who got me on the sparrow so I could get a photo. Third personal observation of this species in Albany County, after finding others at Washington Park (2018-05-07) and Normanskill Farm (2019-05-12).
