This is the male that appears in photo ML45020901 above. Recorded while the bird was perched as shown in that picture. These sound like soft toop calls: spectrally they're similar to the others we recorded here but their volume is much lower. The bird was producing them while moving about on a branch with a female that was nearby. The file was trimmed and amplified by 8 dB.
Observation details
Recorded type 6 toops and flight calls, also photos. Monstrous bills. Additional type 6 flight calls are visible in the spectrogram in the white-breasted nuthatch recording ML45092931. Comments with that recording identify type 6 calls in at four times in that recording. Even more type 6 flight calls are visible in the recording for type 4s above (ML45097701) and in the screen grabs extracted from that audio file (also shown above). Type 6 confirmed by Matt Young at the Cornell Laboratory of Ornithology.
