Observation details
County first. Seen with Jonathan Klizas. Noticeably smaller than Common Terns it was flying amongst, giving great comparison views allowing identification despite distance. Tail streamers also noticeably longer relative to body than adjacent COTEs, reminiscent of Barn Swallow. Bill smaller and head rounder than COTE as well. Top left bird in this heavily cropped photo from digiscoped video (other two are COTE). Smaller size, rounder head, longer tail, and less dark underwing primary trailing edge apparent. Unreported in Morris County, but today appears to be an Arctic Tern irruption event across northern NJ (and beyond) and Budd Lake is among the likeliest locations in Morris County for terns. ABA lifer #300!
