Observation details
Further research shows my utter incompetence in sapsucker identification. I still remain with my original identification. Well, the basics are that it was a black and brown primarily with white near the bottom of the back, also a white stripe on the side, a red crown and throat, a black mask and white stripe on the malar. There was no black chest. The bird actually was an immature, with extensive juvenile plumage on the back and breast particularly, which is much too late for this plumage for a Red-naped, but right in line with a Yellow-bellied. The back was the main negative feature, looking a little like a Red-naped, but I don't see how a Red-naped could have this much juvenile plumage at this late of a date. Please correct if I am wrong. I don't know that much about young sapsuckers. In addition, a complete black throat band connected and there was no red nape, though these might not be particularly useful as they are variable.
