Observation details
Six individual, standing close together between the whimbrels and the willets in the shallow parts of the lagoon. Much smaller than either whimbrel or willet, with relatively long legs and a long, slightly decurved bill. Most of them showed a rufous patch on the cheeks, as is typical for the breeding plumage of this species. Stilt sandpiper is known to stay well into May, until the last individuals head north to their breeding areas.
