Observation details
Counted in flight & photo. All had same wing pattern, confirming it was not a mixed flock. They were a tight flock all eating close together, which matches sanderling behavior and is different than the other peeps I saw that were all separate. They kept flying off together and coming back to a similar location together. They were a mix of breeding male, dark head/throat and either female or nonbreeding (date suggests female but they looked more like the nonbreeding picture in Sibley) In flight, they all had the same long bold white wing stripe - more dramatic than western/least sandpipers.
