Observation details
Both Chad and I got very good looks at this bird. This bird had very distinct markings on the face with a white patch above the eye that lead to a less prominent white stripe running towards the nape, as well as a very prominent white stipe running below the eye. This bird did not have the black breast band that a red-naped sapsucker would have. The head was also not as distinctly red as a red-breasted sapsucker. In the end we saw characteristics of both species and decided to call it a hybrid.
