Male Costa's Hummingbird performing a dive display to a female Anna's Hummingbird. The Anna's was in the process of constructing a nest. The nest was incomplete and had no eggs at the time and consisted of only of a thin layer of spider silk.
Observation details
Small green hummingbird with a short tail, purple, helmeted gorget with long gorget tails. Green breast with whitish throat and white ear patch. The bird was seen performing a shallow "U"-shaped dive display for an Anna's female. The dive display produced a high-pitched rising and then descending noise. The dive display sounds are drowned out by a noisy House Finch but are easily visible on the spectrogram and consist of a thin, rising then falling whistle approaching 10k Hz at the highest pitch.
