Observation details
First seen in a very brief flight out in the marsh; it appeared as a dark bird with neck extended. An hour later, the bird flew to within 50-60 yards from the dike, allowing us much better views. This medium-sized wading bird was actively foraging near a Yellowlegs (see photo) which allowed a very nice size comparison. While foraging with its long, decurved, grayish bill in the mud, I saw him retrieve at least one fish and a frog. Chestnut red head, neck and upper back; dark green/bronze body; facial skin was dark, outlined with light coloration above and below eyes but not going around the eyes; dark gray legs. In my previous experience with Ibis, I knew to check eye color, looking to distinguish between red and brown. With the dark, spitting-rain conditions, I could only see that the eyes were dark. Photos attached/ heavily cropped.
