Observation details
Continuing. Amazing bird. Much larger than the RS it was associating with, and appeared as large or larger than one RT it was chasing high overhead. Dark head, yellow cere, dark reddish body with black streaks, body often appearing black in bad light. Wide wings, but didn't meld with the tail as typical for BH. Heavily barred wings and barred secondaries obvious when perched. One main large white band on tail, more BW like than RS. Top side of tail showed a second white band, a little narrower than the other. Stronger white commas/crescents in the outer primaries, but could be difficult to see at times, more obvious at distance. Longer tail than BH. Long yellow legs/feet, barely making it to the white band. Call sounds like BH, but occasionally with higher pitched RS-like phrases. White undertail coverts with fine black bars. 5 emarginated primaries when soaring. Wings pushed a little forward. Wingshape more RS-like (but wider), pinching in at the tail reminiscent of hbki. Wings typically pushed forward when soaring and with dihedral. Some remige and underwing covert molt occurring. Gives very different impressions depending upon the viewing angle, sometimes even giving a ZT impression. P10 is very short, P7 is longest. Not sure if that's representative of normal or not. Initially flying over the river at the bridge when I parked. Flew to the west to the large Eucalyptus south of the trail. Stayed for a while before flying further west. I grabbed my scope and returned to find a RS in the tree. Turned away to find this bird back, some interactions with the RS. Both birds flew to the east, eventually refound the hybrid in another Eucalyptus on the east side of the road, best viewed near the house across from the turn to the farm/school. The bird left, getting pretty high in a kettle of TV, RT, and a RS, harassing one of the RT with an RS. Went up and down the road from where I was standing a couple times, I returned to the trail after I lost it to the S. Whilst working on updating my checklist, I heard it behind me, and watched it circle around and then head back to the west.
