Observation details
Thought to be an immature male transitioning to adult dress. Noticed to be small in the field, barely larger than a Reichenow's Seedeater. Facial pattern and yellow flanks seen clearly in the field immediately suggested a "golden-breasted" bunting. Lesser and median coverts concolorous with the rest of the wing, showing dark centres and lighter edges, but not wholly white as a Golden-breasted Bunting of this age would show. Combined with yellow on flanks, small size and short jingly song heard immediately before observation (which was thought to be from these birds and was unlike Golden-breasted Bunting), id of Brown-rumped fits well.
