Occasional N6 Common Crossbill calling in the background the recording of N20 Scottish Crossbill.
Observation details
One bird giving N20 'toop' call from canopy, not in view. Made three recordings which should be recognisable to call type. After making these recordings played pre-recorded N20 excitement call (which sounded identical to the call being given by the unseen bird). Very soon a male crossbill dropped into small pine c. 30 m from trail and calling continued, presumably from this bird. Too dull and distant to make out the bill structure. It sounded as if there was more than one bird here but only the male was seen. About an hour later a flock of 6+ crossbills seen briefly in flight then landed in uppermost branches of a pine. Excitement calls resembled N20 but not recorded, and birds not photographed. Not too far from location where I made a sound recording of N20 excitement call an hour earlier - perhaps the same group.
