Bird giving N20 excitement call which is associated exclusively with Scottish Crossbill
Observation details
Initially heard in pines by trail, giving what sounded like N20 excitement calls. Responded to playback of pre-recorded N20 call and began calling excitedly. Five crossbills then flew from the canopy, looped around and returned to same trees. At this point I made this recording of the calls. Generally obscured and difficult to view as they remained in the uppermost section canopy but definitely saw adult male, adult female and at least one streaky juvenile so probably a family group. Best view was of a female with a decent robust bill, deep and chunky - appeared more substantial than birds I'd considered to be Scottish - at Beinn Eighe NNR and Abernethy forest in the previous days. No photos as I was concentrating on sound recording and light was appalling.
