Observation details
Very interesting behavior tonight. Continuing Wood-Pewee. Earlier in the day, around the afternoon, observed the Wood-Pewee acting as did on the first day. Seen in the tamarisk tree right outside of the casitas, flycatching and flying over the pond occasionally. Approximately an hour later, after looking at the Brown Thrasher, seen in a small willow-like tree on the side of the grassy area by the interior of the inn. Lower to the ground, almost head-level. Continued flycatching and flying around. A few hours passed and was not seen for that time, although we had not been actively looking for it. Eventually, in the evening, we were all walking around the interior of the inn around sunset, and the Wood-Pewee reappeared on the tamarisk by the pond. It then promptly flew to a mesquite tree in the gulch behind the casitas. After this, it stayed on the mesquite, singing quite frequently and loudly. It did this for around a half-hour, sitting on the bare mesquite branch at sunset. Eventually, it flew somewhere off in the distance, and we lost it. I did not know that this would be the last time that we would see the Wood-Pewee for the rest of this trip. I am still curious as to what this behavior is. However, as I mentioned, we did not see the Pewee again for the next two days. The Eastern Wood-Pewee is a highly migratory species, so I question if this is behavior they exhibit before leaving an area to migrate further. wherever it is, however, I just hope it is safe and got to where it needs to go.
