Observation details
There were 4 adult geese in the inlet cell and 2 family groups (a pair with 4 golden goslings and another pair with 6 golden goslings) that foraged outside the basin's chain-link fence. The family with 4 goslings foraged intermittently as they walked clockwise outside the chain-link fence from midway E-W along the basin’s S perimeter trail to nearly the NE corner of the basin. As they walked N along the basin’s W side, they joined the goose family with 6 golden goslings and seemed to get along pretty well together as the young from both families fed on green foliage of prickly lettuce (Lactuca serriola) and the foliage and inflorescences of yellow sweetclover (Melilotus officinalis). Among [human] family groups enjoying the basin scenery and wildlife today, a father with a young (age 4 or 5?) daughter was so busy using his mobile phone to film his daughter that he actually put her safety at risk. Since he did not rein in her youthful enthusiasm about wanting to get as close as possible to the admittedly cute goslings, she could have been hurt by one of the adults (which repeatedly hissed at her but never approached her aggressively). A different family (a mom and her young … age 5 or 6? … son rode bicycles clockwise around the basin and paused to watch the 4 golden goslings drink from a small puddle in the N pedestrian perimeter trail quite near the gate in the N fence. Later, after one adult and 3 of those goslings squeezed through the space between the swing gates along that N fence, the other adult and one gosling were now separated by the fence from the other 4 family members just E of that gate (where the gosling fed with enthusiastic snaps of its head as it tore green leaves from a 6-inch tall prickly lettuce plant on the outside of the fence).
